Why you need Reflexology!
Updated: Nov 12, 2018
What is reflexology? Why do you need it? How does it work??
I love, love, love reflexology! I remeber when I was first introduced to it. It was allll the way back in 2006, I was pregnant with my first child and I was a week past my due date. Nothing seemed to be moving along. I was walking like my widwife told me to help get labor started, I was doing everything. It seems like when you are at the end of pregnancy the longer time goes on the more doctors and yes, even some midwives seem to get a little pushy. They want the baby out for many different reasons but not as much as I did! I was ready, big, fat and uncomfortable. In my searching for things to speed up this labor process at 11:00 at night, I found that there is a reflex point near the back of your ankle that when you stimulate the area it can bring on labor. Let me tell you I was VERY skeptical it would work but I was willing to try anything. I had my husband rub the points on my ankle and nothing happened. I wasn't suprised. But then, 8 hours later I was in labor. Some may say it's coinsidence and that may be true but I have had other encounters with reflexology that could not be chalked up as coincidence. In my heart of hearts I beleive it was reflexology that helped me.

Let's take a look at reflexology.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an alternative healing technique that involves applying pressure to certain areas of either the feet or hands. These points correspond to different organs or areas of your body. An example would be like the story above, pressing on certain points at the back of your ankle corresponds to the reproductive organs in your body. Stimulating this area can bring on labor, heal different areas that may be causing pain or inmbalance by bringing awareness to that area and can even bring on menstration.
Why do I need a reflexology session?
Not only is reflexology relaxing, it is energizing! That doesn't sound right does it? Let me explain, while you are receiving reflexology it feels great. Your body goes into total relaxation mode! Every time I receive this ancient practice I fall asleep. I'm one of those people that hates to fall asleep on the massage table because I am afraid I will miss the whole massage! With reflexology I can't keep myself awake no matter how hard I try! When you get up from having a session however, most people say they feel very energized. They notice thier feet feel better and they will even look better too! We talked about how it can be healing to your body and it is also very detoxifying.
How does reflexology work?
The Prevention Magazine stated it pretty well that really, nobody knows for sure why it works. Some say it balances the electromagnetic field that surrounds the body. Some people say it breaks up waste deposits and improves circulation and others say it stops the mental chatter and helps your body to focus on the one area of your body. I'm sure it is a combination of it all and I am ok with the fact that some things in holistic health care, can not be explained.
As a massage therapist I if you say you are having a thyroid issue, I obviously cannot massage your thyroid! Same thing goes for your heart or lungs. Reflexology is a tool that I can use to help areas in the body I may not be able to get to. It is also something anyone can receive even if you just had surgery, are bed ridden or just can not receive a massage for whatever reason.
Have you ever had a reflexology session? What was your experience?
